Jerry Koza

Veronika Loušová – 31.05.2004

Jerry Koza has become a laureate of Ladislav Sutnar prize - he was awarded by the magazine Architekt. He got on with chairs "Tumble" and "Idler" in design world. He says: “Design is my hobby“.

Jerry is a student of AAAD Prague (Atelier of Architecture). In spite of the fact that he is only 27 years old he managed to design and to effect a few interesting work. It is easy to see his work a mile off - waves and arcs are predominated. There is no place for right angels.

Your work is characterized by curves – Do you think that nowadays, cubes and edges are out –of–date?

Definitely not, but a forming should always come out of a function, a quality of materials and applied technologies. That does not exclude cubes and edges.

Whose creation is close to you? Have you got any role model? What do you think about a production of Verner Panton?

I admire his „Pantonka“. It is an amazing thing. I would like to buy it. From childhood I have been admiring sailing boats, aeroplanes, airships… I am glad that I can return to this topic with some of my works. Then the work is becoming rather a hobby.

What is a source of your inspiration?

Perhaps all things which entrance me. Definitely, it is a nature.

What was a motion for design of chairs "Tumble" and "Idler"?

The chairs were created as an experiment after a previous co-operation which was connected with a production of a reception counter for Eurotel Company. The counter was made in a shipyard by technology which was used for a construction of yachts. Then I was captured by an offer to make some laminate items for an interior. Till that time I had not made anything like that, so we had to learn. At first, "Tumble" had been made and then "Idler" and "Udder". But these chairs are still only prototypes which lack a final correction.

You use so poetic names for your objects – as for example: "Gills", "Vent" and "Body" which represent parts of the fountain which you designed. What is hidden under these names?

Gills - a translucent orange shell which is dynamically infused by water which then gushes out by a gravity flow through bored holes. Lampposts serve for filling and work also as cisterns.

Vent - a blue bubbling pool.

Body - the biggest red shell where jets (with effects of flicker and vibration) are located in the bottom part. Changeable figures should be created on the surface if it is highlighted.

Could you introduce your other projects from a design sphere to us?

Nowadays, we prepare a new yacht Octhopus 27 with Derek Company. I have to design new extensions of cockpits and an interior. The interior of small ship is relate to the exterior of ship so much that it helped me with forming of the extension.

Would you like to deal with architecture or design in future?

First of all, it depends on an opportunity and an accidental factor, which finally decide about your job. Personally, I would like to pursue architecture but with a specific overlap.

You won the plane ticket as the laureate of Ladislav Sutnar prize - Have you used it yet?

No, I have not, but I look forward to flying there. Maybe in summer.

What does this prize mean for you?

It means the fact that somebody was interested in my work and appreciated it.

What do you think of the situation in Czech design?

Nothing good. Not because people would be unskilful here - the opposite is true. But conditions for a creation are absolutely unacceptable. You must be your sponsor. You have to do work which is not entertaining and earn money which you invest to your ideas, make prototypes and then offer them to somebody. Or you can directly found your manufacture. It is a very inhibiting and exhausting process. I hope the situation will change.

Thank you for the interview.

If you would like to have some thing from Jerry at home, your wish can become real. All realized works are possible to buy from Jerry.
